The Japan Asian Association and Asian Friendship Society (JAFS), starting with the water supply, has been engaged in environmental conservation, educational support, and self-reliant living support to respond to local demands. It aims to achieve regional self-reliance by combining necessary projects focusing on those in the four areas in order to solve regional issues. Also, it carries out enlightenment and public relations activities in Japan to encourage people to get interested in support activities for Asia countries and holds charity events to encourage members in Japan to widen the circle of support and other activities for Asia.
Rural areas in the Philippines have no waste treatment system, and people have no choice but to throw out their garbage in the water, such as the ocean and rivers. In Matnog, where the project was held, the plastic waste discharged from residential areas prevents young mangrove trees from growing and causes unsanitary living and water environments that have an impact on residents' livelihoods, as well as marine pollution from plastic debris. JAFS has engaged in local resident-centered waste management since April 2022, including waste sorting and converting of organic waste into fertilizer, backed by the TOTO Water Environment Fund. JAFS has also received many requests for seminar opportunities and participation in the project from neighboring villages that became aware of the project. For this fiscal year, they plan to widely expand the project to other areas. They will make contributions to global environmental conservation and achievement of the SDGs in collaboration with people in the Philippines, Asia, and the world so that their engagement will continue and evolve under the initiative of local residents and take root in the regions.
JAFS has been playing a vital role in the promotion of development centered by local residents in Asia since its establishment in 1979. As major pillars of the project, it engages in securing access to safe water and support for the basic requirements for human beings to survive. It has carried out a variety of activities with the aim of eliminating poverty, such as a program to provide wells to some Indian regions lacking safe drinking water and a program to supply safe water to rural areas in Asia. It engages in activities rooted in the conditions of each region in collaboration with local partner organizations in 18 countries and 70 regions so that local people will take the initiative to continue carrying out activities that takes root in the conditions of the regions.
