Harvest in Architecture

Today, we architects are faced with a great issue with global warming continuing its trend and extreme natural disasters occurring ever more frequently: sustainability. It is the greatest issue that we have shared as a world since modernism. It calls upon us to reassess our views of nature through asking ourselves the question: How will we choose to live together with Mother Earth in the age ahead?

“Harvest in Architecture” is a concept we propose for taking in nature’s blessings in a sustainable manner through reinstating architecture that is shaped for us to live as one with our planet. As expressed by the word “harvest”, which connotes “colorfulness” (diversity), “happiness” (joy), and “energy” (vitality), we envision architecture as a means of cultivating our relationship with nature, sustainably harvesting the fruits of our environment, and creating places where people can gather and interact with one another—much like agriculture. We can only achieve these things by establishing a balanced relationship between nature and people.

In this exhibition, we set out to question how tomorrow’s architecture could be shaped to exist as part of the environment and its cycles in order so that we can sustainably enjoy the blessings of nature.

SUEP. is an architect unit working internationally out of offices in Tokyo and Fukuoka. Making the Earth’s environment their primary focus, they have been utilizing simulation technology to study the behavior of natural elements such as wind and heat to develop environmental building designs for a new age where architecture exists symbiotically with nature through cycling energy and resources.

Notable accolades include the 27th Yoshioka Award (2011), 29th AACA Ashihara Prize (2019), and 2018 Good Design Award. Major works include the House in Awaji Island (2018, Hyogo), Kyushu Geibunkan Annex 1* (2013, Fukuoka), and Midori no Oka Terrace (2020, Tokyo).
