TOTO's Cultural Activities in Architecture
TOTO has been engaged in social contribution activities centered on architecture, design, and water-use, which constitute the aspects of everyday life and culture that are closely associated with the company’s operations as a manufacturer of a wide range of household fixtures and appliances. TOTO GALLERY·MA and TOTO Publishing are two vehicles for TOTO’s cultural activities that were launched with the principal aim of nurturing and enhancing the culture of architecture.

TOTO GALLERY·MA is a gallery specializing in architecture that is located in Nogizaka, Tokyo. The gallery has been devoted to hosting private exhibitions for architects from both Japan and abroad since it was established in 1985. By allowing exhibitors to create their own shows, the gallery has continued to serve as a stage for exhibitions that are richly imbued with the personal ideas and values of the individuals and are works of design in themselves.

TOTO Publishing has been producing books with a unique perspective on architecture, design, and everyday life and culture since it was established in 1989. Starting in 1995, it has been making publications in conjunction with TOTO GALLERY·MA’s exhibitions, to together produce multifaceted presentations of the ideas and works of the featured architects.

In a complex world marked by intensified globalization and diversified values, it is foreseeable that architecture will find an increasingly important role for its ability to integrate a variety of lifestyles, cultures, and technologies into real and concrete projects. It is TOTO’s mission to continue to share with a greater audience the ideas of the forerunning architects through the activities of TOTO GALLERY·MA and TOTO Publishing.
