About the Exhibition
TOTO GALLERY・MA is pleased to present "Hideyuki Nakayama: , and then" at the TOTO Museum (Kitakyushu, Fukuoka). This is a traveling exhibition of architect Hideyuki Nakayama's well-received show ", and then".

Nakayama's architecture, created based on his originality and keen sensitivity, is attracting much attention. This exhibition features various films to convey aspects of his architecture that cannot be communicated through architectural models and drawings, including his finely tuned senses and thoughts, beauty and qualities of his works, and how they continue to evolve with the flow of time.

The gallery turns into a small cinema complex showing six short films specially shot for this exhibition by six movie directors. On the "islands" serving as lobbies for respective cinema theaters, images of the film making process, drawings and models of architectures shown in the films are on display.

How is each architecture used by its occupants after completion? And how does life unfold there? Nakayama thinks that the state of architecture after completion ––or ", and then" what happens–– is important, although it is something architects do not see. Each of the short films reveals how time flows in the architecture and its surrounding context.
We would like to take this opportunity to present Hideyuki Nakayama's "ideas" and "experiments" reflecting his unique viewpoint of objectively observing each architecture he has created.
