About the Exhibition
Exhibition Overview
TOTO GALLERY·MA will be holding the second solo exhibition of architect Hiroshi Naito.
In the first exhibition held in 1995, titled "Composition of the Protoform" (6.9~7.22), Naito presented his work together with his concept of the "protoform", which he described as "something like the protoplasm of an architecture that exists within the depths of everyone's mind". After 18 years, we find that Naito's concept of the "protoform" has since grown in its vividness through taking on new words and further meanings.
According to Naito, who has continued to investigate the "value of space", "architecture is the place where the lives of the people who live within it dwells, and the architecture itself comes to life as the memories of the space and time experienced by the people cohere to it". He holds a belief that what must be realized today in the post-3.11 age is a shift away from the "protoform" (a dream living for an individual) to the "protoscape" (a dream landscape for a common body of people).
Through featuring a re-created portion of the Naito Architect & Associates workspace where Naito's numerous projects have been conceived, this exhibition will offer a view into the architect's thought process behind his early representative works, current projects, and unrealized proposals.
Visitors are invited to enjoy the works and words that have originated from the site within the mind of Hiroshi Naito, who has continued to run determinedly onward on his path as an architect throughout the years.
