About the Exhibition
TOTO GALLERY・MA is pleased to present "POLITICS OF LIVING," a solo exhibition by dot architects.
dot architects characteristically approaches the planning/designing/construction/use of architecture on the same footing and addresses every step of these processes.
They explore possibilities of actively involving all people in the creation of architecture they use by harnessing the power of accessible resources, including materials, workforce, acquaintances, and local ties.
People in local communities and a diverse circle of close colleagues naturally come together in sympathy with dot architects' seemingly unconventional activities, which transcend the existing framework of architecture based on the division of labor. dot architects are now creating places where people can enjoy work and play while living vibrantly in various locations. On Shodo Island, for example, they have been creating places to promote community education through art for ten years since they built Umaki Camp (2013) at the Setouchi Triennale. At their home base Chidori Bunka (2017-), a multidisciplinary cultural complex in Kitakagaya, Osaka, they are involved in its operation and design. In this way, their tangible, flexible, and continuous involvement in place-making gradually gives rise to places appropriate for specific locations. They believe the dynamics or the "POLITICS OF LIVING" that spawn "small autonomous spaces" are the key to breaking the status quo and transforming society.
This exhibition introduces the overall picture of their activities that expand the possibilities of architecture. It also offers an enjoyable experience of making your putter and playing together on the putting golf course in the courtyard. The exhibition invites viewers to explore and discover the significance of dot architects' POLITICS OF LIVING.
