Luminosity/Porosity investigates aspects of porosity and light, the fusion of architecture, urbanism and landscape and ultimately the fusion of matter and spirit. The former arguments for fusion of architecture, urbanism and landscape can be reinforced with a testament for the fusion of spirit and matter as well as fusion of light with form, shade and shadow. Rather than a pre-occupation with independent object-like forms, it is experiential phenomena of spatial sequences within, around and between which triggers emotions and joy in the experience of architecture. In Luminosity/Porosity we’ve tried to express how the phenomenal properties of light, reflected or refracted over a delicately faceting form, transcends the formal aspects of the making of these surfaces.

As he says “ It’s no use to build the building if the building has no meaning.”, what Steven Holl aims is to realize the building which has the meaning.
He has had a personal struggle with this seeking the balance between the experiential phenomena of the actual space and the idea which is the force that drives the design.
What makes Steven Holl a magnificent architect is, we think, his approach to creation; “ For us, the beginning of every project is mental and manual. It begins with the mind via the hand and heart. Only then it can go digital. When you begin a process, you want to bring every emotion, everything possible to the concept sketch, then turn to digital tools and use all the supercharged power you need.”
This exhibition is being the first exhibition of Steven Holl in Japan, and he will focus on his architectural philosophy “ Luminosity “ and “ Porosity “ in his installation including his Porosity models and photographic images of his representative recent works to current competition winning scheme.
