Steven Holl founded Steven Holl Architects in New York in 1976. The firm has gained an international reputation for excellence in design in a variety of project types including museums, educational facilities, and housing.
Time Magazine named Steven Holl as America’s Best Architect, for “buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye.” His honors include National AIA Design Awards, the Grande Medailles d’Or and the Alvar Aalto Medal. He was recently honored by the Smithsonian Institution with the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture.
He is best known for the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki; the Chapel of St. Ignatius in Seattle and Simmons Hall at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His current work includes the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art Expansion in Kansas City; the expansion and renovation of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County; a 7-tower Hybrid Housing project in Beijing; a Water Treatment Facility in Hamden, Connecticut; and a new building for the School of Art and Art History at the University of Iowa.
Recently Steven Holl Architects won three international design competitions: Herning Center of the Arts, Belgium; Cite du Surf et de l’Ocean, in Biarritz, France; and Sail Hybrid, a seaside resort project in the town of Knokke-Heist, Belgium.
