Glenn Murcutt

Born in London, 1936. He spent his early childhood in New Guinea, then in 1941 moved with his family to live in Sydney, Australia. He graduated from Sydney Technical College (presently University of New South Wales) in 1961. Having made a study tour of Europe and gained practical experience in architecture offices, he began his own design activities in 1969. Since then, he has carried out his work without staff. Pursuing architecture rooted in Australia’s historical culture and diverse climate and topography, he devotes himself to local design work. On the other hand, he is active internationally, teaching and lecturing at educational institutions in many countries across the world. He has received many awards, including the Alvar Aalto Medal in 1992 and the Pritzker Prize in 2002.

Main works include: Marie Short House (1974-75/1980), Frederics/White House (1981-82/2001-04), Magney House (1982-84/1999), Marika-Alderton House (1991-94), Simpson-Lee House (1988-94), Fletcher-Page House (1996-98), Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Art Center (1996-99), House in Southern Highlands (1997-2001), Murcutt-Lewin House and Studio (2000-2003), Walsh House (2001-2005).
