Born on the island of Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture in 1960. Completed a master’s degree in architecture at Shibaura Institute of Technology in 1986. Established Yamashita Kai Architectural Office in 1991. Renamed Atelier Tekuto in 1995. Served as part-time lecturer at Shibaura Institute of Technology, University of Tokyo Graduate School, Tokyo University of Science, and Keio University Graduate School from 1999 to 2011. Became a part-time lecturer at Kyushu University in 2011.
Partial List of Awards: 1st prize for emerging architecture in the ar+d awards, and 1st prize in the Busan Eco-Center International Design Competition, both in 2004; grand prix in the ARCHIP Architectural Award, and International Architecture Awards, both in 2008; prize for excellence in the Japan Association of Architectural Firms Award, 2009; gold prize in the 18th Space Design Competition (Nippon Electric Glass), Green Good Design Award, and award for excellence in the IBEC Sustainable Residential Award, all in 2011.
