NANJING TOTO CO., LTD. fined for punishment of the actual chemical substance storage amount

In August 2020, TOTO Nanking was fined for punishment of the actual chemical substance storage amount, which exceeded the permitted storage amount and paid the fine. As a recurrence prevention measure, the management system for the chemical substance storage amount has been improved.

Initiatives of Environmental Legal Control Division

The Legal Control Division is responsible for environmental laws and regulations, monitoring and auditing the legal compliance conditions of each department and taking corrective measures in the event of violations.

Initiatives at Our Facilities

The TOTO Group aims to reduce SOx, NOx, and dust emissions in order to strengthen its pollution prevention efforts.
In addition, those plants in Japan to which the water-quality total-volume restriction applies keep effluent below certain specified levels in order to maintain water quality.
We also manage chemical substances appropriately. With regard to substances to which the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) Law applies, the quantity used, emissions and amount of movement are monitored.

Measures against Dioxin and promotion of proper PCB disposal

・Measures against Dioxin
In February 2012, the TOTO Group announced that it had finished turning off one factory incinerator that had previously been in operation.

・Promotion of Proper PCB Disposal
In accordance with the relevant laws and regulations, transformers, condensers and stabilizers that have high PCB levels (more than $5000\text{mg/kg}$) are managed appropriately and 849 units have been disposed of by the deadline of March 2023, following the disposal plan of Japan Environmental Safety Corporation (JESCO). Disposal of all high-concentration PCBs has been completed.
In addition, electric devices that have low PCB levels (more than 0.5mg/kg to 5000mg/kg) are disposed as their PCB levels are identified through analysis.

Initiatives for Products

Reduction in Harmful Chemical Substances

・Reducing harmful substances from our products
TOTO is making stern efforts to remove harmful substances from all the products we provide to customers, based upon applicable laws and regulations (the Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacture, etc.*and the Industrial Health and Safety Law) and demands from the market.

Our goal is to reduce to the barest minimum the effects of chemical substances on our bodies and the Earth. We also work together with our suppliers and utilize green procurement to ensure the products and parts delivered to the TOTO Group are also carefully managed in regards to harmful chemicals.

* Act on the Evaluation of Chemical Substances and Regulation of Their Manufacture, etc. This act governs reviews and regulations on manufacturing in regard to chemical substances.

・Reducing the emission of formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from products

TOTO takes measures to control the emission of formaldehyde and VOC, as these substances are considered to be causal substances of sick building syndrome.

The 2002 amendment to the Building Standards Act stipulates regulations for the use of formaldehyde and chlorpyrifos. In line with this, TOTO uses materials of the highest grade in the building materials classification (F☆☆☆☆), which are characterized by very low formaldehyde emissions, in all products to which the said amendment may apply. We use no chlorpyrifos and prohibit the use of any material containing chlorpyrifos.

We also comply with the 4VOC Standard (toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene and styrene), which was set voluntarily by the industries of building materials and housing equipment in 2009. Compliant products are described on the label as “Compliant with 4VOC Standard (wooden building material).”

・Environmental Contribution through Air Purification Performance

HYDROTECT is an innovative solution for a cleaner environment both outside and inside homes and businesses through photocatalytic processes that use only natural resources such as water and light.

It has self-cleaning effect for building facades and also cleans air by removing nitrogen oxides(NOx)emitted by cars and industrial activities.
