Ishoya Yoshida


Yoshida was born in Tokyo 1894. In 1923 he graduated from the Architecture Department of the Tokyo Fine Arts School. After a period of study in Europe Yoshida returned to Japan and concentrated on architectural design and on the modernization of traditional Japanese Architecture. In 1941 he became a lecturer at the Tokyo Fine Arts School and was promoted to the rank of professor there in 1946. In 1949 he was made a professor at the newly renamed Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Yoshida received the Japan Academy of Arts Prize in 1952 and became a member of the Academy in 1954. In 1955 he became professor emeritus at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music after which he received numerous award and commendations as a Personal of Cultural Merits in 1964, and an honorary membership to the A.I.A. in 1968. After his death in 1974 he was given the Junior Third Rank and First Class Order of the Sacred Treasure.
