Seeking to reduce waste at construction sites, TOTO formulated its own packaging design guidelines based on the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle).
In fiscal 2023, we have achieved reduction rate of 10.7%(Target: 10.3%) compared to the 2013 level by changing packaging materials, etc..
Reduce: Lessen the amount of packaging materials Examples: Simple packaging, no packaging, set packaging Reuse: Using the same packaging materials repeatedly Example: Returnable box Recycle: Concern for recycling Examples: Using recyclable materials, or devising a product configuration that allows easier separation of the materials at the time of disposal
Reduction rate for domestic packaging materials (compared to FY2009)
When packaging artificial marble counters (hereafter referred to as counters) for public restrooms, etc., packaging material (hereafter referred to as support base) that holds and stabilizes the counter is placed on the bottom of the packaging box. This support base is strong and provides excellent support for the counter, but external impacts are easily transmitted directly to the counter, and even small impacts can easily damage the counter. Therefore, the support base was improved, and triangular cutouts were made on the joint surfaces of the support base. This eliminated the hard parts of the joint surfaces, and the packaging material absorbed the impact.

In response to the issue of reduced product strength due to model changes, we have improved the cushioning performance
by reviewing the packaging structure, and have succeeded in keeping the amount of packaging material used to the same level as the previous product.
Easy installation with assisted packaging
Although it is a wall-hung toilet, it is a heavy product and cannot stand on its own. Issues included being unable to hold it during installation and the toilet being unable to support the weight. To address this issue, the structure of the bottom components was revised to allow it to stand on its own with a function to prevent it from tipping over, and the shape was devised to prevent the bottom from falling out, distributing the weight. Furthermore, when the toilet is placed on the packaging material, the height of the fixing holes in the toilet and the fixing bolts on the wall are aligned, creating a packaging material that assists with positioning and fixing during installation. The support members that bear the compressive load during storage have a structure with many corners to improve their strength.

We have developed a packaging structure that achieves the following two objectives using fewer resources.
For products that cannot stand on their own,
-Ensures stability and resistance to compressive loads
-Reduces workload during installation
