CO2 emissions that come from water-circulating areas make up a large part of household emissions, on par with household appliances and private cars.
TOTO Group products are things that people are certain to use every day. The TOTO Group therefore upholds a comfortable environment for people's everyday lives while at the same time actively working to develop and promote the widespread adoption of green products that protect the global environment without people even realizing it. In this way, The TOTO Group makes a positive contribution toward environmental protection.

Also, since the overwhelming bulk of CO2 emissions during a TOTO product’s life cycle are generated during product use, we have been working actively to reduce the environmental load of our products, so as to make a positive contribution to the global environment through its business activities.

Development of environmentally friendly products
(Products Environmental Assessment)

Product Environmental Assessment is a method of evaluating the environmental performance of new products by identifying CO2 emissions using LCA* and evaluating water and energy saving capabilities and consideration of the 3Rs of the environment during the product planning and design processes in order for us to continue developing environmentally friendly products and improve their environmental performance.

*LCA (Life Cycle Assessment): LCA is a procedure to quantitatively and objectively evaluate the environmental impact throughout all stages of the product life cycle from procurement of product-related materials to manufacturing, transport, use, and disposal.

The TOTO Group evaluates environmental performance by setting evaluation items with reference to LCA guidelines and case studies.
As a result of the assessment, the TOTO Group found that our CO2 emissions and water consumptions were significantly high in the use stage. We consider the reduction of CO2 emissions, energy saving, and water saving as key environmental performance factors, and we are working to reduce the product environmental burden.

Items of environmental performance assessment Descriptions
(Life cycle CO2)
CO2 emissions at each stage of the product life cycle
Water-saving Water consumption during product use
Energy-saving Energy consumption during product use
Consideration of 3Rs 3Rs promotion during manufacturing and designing [Reduction of product mass, use of recycled materials, Use of renewable resources, easy degradability, material indication]
Air purification Purification of contaminated substances (air/water) during product use
Reduction of harmful chemical substances Reduction of contamination (air/water) throughout the entire life cycle
Biodiversity (timber) Use of legal timber for wood materials and recyclable materials in the procurement stage

Lifecycle Assessment

Lifecycle Assessment
*A lifecycle assessment quantifies and objectively evaluates the impact of a product on the environment in every stage of its life from the gathering of materials to production, transportation, usage and disposal.

TOTO green products sales ratio

TOTO has facilitated the development and expanded use of "TOTO green products," defined as environmentally friendly, high-performance products.
In fiscal 2020, green products accounted for 82% of net sales for the TOTO Group as a whole.
