Towards a world where all people can use clean water
Towards a world where all people can use clean water
Clean water, hygienic toilets, and correct hygiene practices. By providing these three essentials of a healthy, dignified life, Water Aid is working to improve the lives of the world's poorest and socially marginalized people.
Taking advantage of water and sanitation expertise, we are currently implementing water and sanitation projects in 34 countries, including Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In Japan, Water Aid is spreading information about water and sanitation situations in developing countries through on-site lectures in schools.
Installing wells and establishing water supply system in Kenya
In the rural areas of Telangana, India, residents rely on groundwater. However, in recent years, groundwater contamination by toxic substances, such as fluorine, has become a serious issue. Furthermore, there was also concern over the spread of water pollution via excrement from open defecation.
Water Aid is working to improve access to water and sanitation in the area, while promoting hygiene practices by offering training sessions for the village’s water sanitation committee, which oversees the operation and maintenance of water supply services of the village, as well as for local residents. Moreover, Water Aid is encouraging local residents to install toilets in order to stop open defecation.

・We had no interest in using toilets before. When building new houses, we did not install a toilet. Now that we have learned the importance of hygiene practices, all of us, including poor families, are willing to install and use toilets. (Male)
・I had to walk to a place 200 meters away two or three times every day to draw water, but now I can save time because the water supply has become available at home. I can go to my one-day jobs earlier, too. (Keelapatra village resident)
