The Japan Asian Association & Asian Friendship Society (JAFS) started its activities by supplying water and has expanded the scope of activities to environmental conservation, educational support, and support for achieving self-reliance in life in response to the requests from local communities. The JAFS combines the necessary projects, mostly from the four key areas above, to solve local issues and then to achieve self-reliance of the community. In Japan, the members nationwide have charity events to widen the circle of activities and support to Asia, while the Society conducts awareness-raising and PR activities to attract attention to Asia and its support activities.
In many rural areas in the Philippines, garbage is often thrown away into the sea, rivers, and other waterfront areas for inevitable reasons. This is a major issue for the town of Mango in the Philippines, where the JAFS carries out the project. Although efforts to reforest mangroves has been made in this town, plastic waste discarded from residential areas is impeding the growth of young mangrove trees along the coast. As a result, it is not only producing unsanitary living and water environments for residents, but is also exerting an influence on the means of making a living and causing marine plastic pollution. In this project, the JAFS will promote composting organic garbage and tree planting, raise residents’ awareness of what is appropriate waste treatment, and promote recycling in order to improve the level of waste treatment in communities and households, while facilitating local residents’ voluntary initiatives.
Since its foundation in 1979, the JAFS has been assuming a role in promoting development by Asian citizens themselves. The JAFS is committed to supporting the provision of safe water and basic living conditions for humans as its main pillars of activities. Having started with a project for digging wells in India, which lacked access to safe drinking water, the JAFS implemented projects to supply safe water to rural areas in Asia with the ultimate goal of eradicating poverty. To achieve this goal, the JAFS believes that it is important for the people in Asia to tackle the projects on their own and thus promotes activities that meet the conditions of each region by liaising with local partner organizations in 70 regions of 18 countries.
